The Words Used Most

The titles' most-used words are the news, and the news is rarely shouted: 15 of the 30 most frequent words are written in capitals in one title in twenty or fewer, while ‘exposed’ is shouted in 60% of the titles that carry it.

The 30 words the average channel used most in its titles, counted so that a channel with 19,454 titles weighs the same as one with 3: a word's share is the mean over the 274 channels of the share of the channel's own titles that carry it, over 284,906 unique titles, repeats dropped, from 1 January 2026 to 14 September 2026. Beside each word, how often a title that carries it writes it in capitals, by the capitalization article's rule. trump, iran and war lead: trump is in 18% of the average channel's titles and 24% of all of them, shouted in 3%.

Over unique titles, repeats dropped; the mean is over all 274 channels, a channel without the word counting as 0. Shouted: of the mixed-case titles the word appears in, the share that write it entirely in capitals, by the capitalization article's rule.

Of the 30, 15 are shouted in 5% of their titles or fewer, the names and the nouns of the news (trump, iran, america, israel and world), and 1 in 25% or more (exposed): the words a title shouts are not the words it is about but the words that promise a reveal. ice, maga, debate and ai never count: written in capitals by convention, an acronym or a label, the rule reads them as ordinary words.

What Stood Out Each Month

Each month has its own words: greenland in Jan, union in Feb, kent in Mar, swalwell in Apr, massie in May, ufc in Jun, lindsey graham in Jul, abdul el-sayed in Aug and lindsay clancy in Sep. They are the news the channels shared, not what any one of them said most.

For each month, the words that stood out against the rest of the year by weighted log-odds, a measure of how much more a word was used in the month than its use over the year would predict. The count behind it is channels, not titles: a word's score for a month rests on how many of the 274 channels put it in at least one title that month, against how many channel-months did in the other months, so a channel that publishes fifty titles a day about one thing cannot make it the month's word by itself. Ten words a month, each with the month's most-viewed title carrying it, which names the event without any hand-written label.

What the Counting Found

The titles are about the news and shout something else: the words used most are the year's names and places, the words shouted most are the promise of a reveal.

Counted channel-weighted, trump is in 18% of the average channel's titles, iran in 8% and war in 5%; pooled, where the biggest outlets count by their output, trump rises to 24% of all titles, because the wire services and broadcasters name him in most of theirs. The 30 most frequent words are shouted in 8% of their titles on average; exposed, shouted in 60%, is the exception that names the rule, a word whose whole job is the reveal.

Month by month the standouts are the shared news, counted by channels so no outlet can set them alone: greenland in Jan, union in Feb, kent in Mar, swalwell in Apr. The words that stand out are almost never the words used most: trump, iran and war are in every month's titles, so no month owns them.

Week by week the year is a series of spikes on a level floor: iran rose 19 points above its average the week of 2 Mar, war 13 the week of 2 Mar, epstein 13 the week of 2 Feb, and each spike's most-viewed title names the event. Between the spikes the titles say what they always say.

Methods and Limitations

The Corpus

The channels, the titles, the dates and the two ways of counting are on the shared page The Corpus and the Counting. In short: the same corpus as the capitalization article, every title published between 1 January 2026 and 14 September 2026, here with a channel's verbatim repeats counted once, 284,906 unique titles of the 293,590, from 274 channels; and every share channel-weighted, computed per channel and averaged over all 274, a channel without the word counting as 0, with the pooled share beside it in the table.

Content Words

A title's words are read from its normalized form, with the channel's show name, episode number and brand tag stripped, lower-cased, a possessive folded into its word, and stopwords (the, of, is, and the like, plus the corpus's own furniture: live, new, video, full, show, watch, podcast) dropped. A word counts once per title however often it recurs. Two adjacent words bound to each other are one term: a pair that appears in fifty titles from ten channels and accounts for at least half of each of its words' own titles (lindsey graham, dolly parton, white house, supreme court). In a title that carries the pair, the pair stands for both words; anywhere else each word counts on its own, so a Graham without a Lindsey is still graham. The shout numbers are read from the title as published, by the capitalization article's rule: a word of three or more letters written entirely in capitals, neither a learned acronym, a generic label nor one of the channel's own tag words, in a title that is not itself all capitals; the rate is over the mixed-case titles the word appears in. A word the rule never counts, an acronym or a label, is marked so rather than given a rate of zero.

The Months

A month's standouts are the words with the highest weighted log-odds against the rest of the year (Monroe, Colaresi and Quinn, 2008: an informative Dirichlet prior proportional to the pooled counts, alpha 500, the score reported as a z-score). The counts are over channel-months: a word's count for a month is the number of channels that used it in at least one title that month, and its count for the rest of the year is the number of channel-months that did in the other months. A word needs five channels in the month to be listed. The example beside each word is the month's most-viewed unique title that carries it together with the month's other standout found in the most of those titles; failing any, the most-viewed title that carries the word at all.

The Weeks

A title's week is the Monday-to-Sunday week of its publish date, from YouTube's Data API; the first and last weeks run past the corpus and are drawn hollow. A word's weekly share is the mean, over the channels with 5 or more titles that week, of the share of the channel's titles that week that carry the word. A spike is a word's highest full-week share less its mean over the full weeks; the list keeps one spike per word and needs ten counted channels to have used the word that week. Every word has two titles for every week it was carried: the week's most-viewed unique title that carries it, and the most-viewed that carries it together with its companion, the word spiking that week (two points above its own average) found in the most of those titles, so a spike of a word as common as trump is also shown with the story that drove it. A week's own spikes are its words furthest above their own averages, twenty at most, ten counted channels each.

Limitations

  • Names are bound, phrases are not. A name written as a pair often enough is one term; a looser phrase is still its words, and a word that means two things (state, deal) is one word. A name the titles hyphenate or abbreviate can appear twice, as the pair and as its second half.
  • The titles name the event; nothing here explains it. A spike's example is a real title chosen by a rule, whatever that title says; the page adds no labels of its own, and a title that bundles two stories is shown as it is.
